OPENING of "genus: nation gender status" at AUB

“A melting Pot in the Near East, The American University at Beirut, Syria. Where Forty Nations Have Students.” The New York Times ( April 3, 1932).

On the occasion of its 150th year, a pavilion is constructed to commemorate defining moments in the course of AUB’s history of inclusion. A medley of images and statistical information portrays  the diversity within the university’s student body and the constantly amplifying struggle to include all who wish to learn.

The President’s Club at AUB invites you to the opening of “genus: nation gender status”, an exhibition of 150 years of AUB’s unity through diversity, at the AUB Assembly Hall Garden on May 17, 2016, at 6:00pm. The pavilion design is by AUB Alumni: Architecture - Ghaith&Jad (www.ghaithjad.com); Graphic Design - Christian Moussa (www.cesiumatom.com).

ON THE PAGES OF THE NEW AISHTI MAGAZINE

Thank you Aishti magazine for the amazing article and Myriam Boulos for the wonderful photo.

Business partners Ghaith Abi Ghanem and Jad Melki, 26 and 27, got their start with the Starch Foundation before setting up their eponymous practice – how does their work represent this generation? “Generations crystallize in hindsight; for now we conceive of our work outside of a specific year or moment, but rather as part of an unfolding process that issues from our collaboration.” So what do they think it is that interests the young of Beirut then? “Young people here are mainly interested in experiencing the city around them. We constantly try to discover new areas and infuse life into them whether it is of cultural nature or entertainment. This mélange of both creates an energetic dynamic that attracts the people to interact and get inspired from one another.”

What is youth? “Youth to us is exploration, experimentation and even mistakes. It is an eye-opening opportunity that offers a personal understanding about your individuality and strength for you to build on it.

BRILLIANT BEIRUT OPENS AT THE FIRST EDITION OF DUBAI DESIGN WEEK!

Brilliant Beirut_ Exhibition curated by Rana Salam_ Concept Design by GHAITH&JAD
The first in a new annual series of Iconic City exhibitions, Brilliant Beirut explored the impact of local urban dynamics in the areas of design, production and creative culture. Curated and designed by Beirut-born and based designer Rana Salam, ‘Brilliant Beirut’ was the first attempt to document the development of design - across architecture, education, graphic design, fashion, furniture and cultural trends - in the the Lebanese capital over the past seven decades since independence (1950s-2015). Drawing parallels with and distinctions from Western design movements, the far-reaching show considers the shifts in design thinking engendered by civil war and the transition to stability. In addition, it examined how Beirut’s complex social make-up helped nurture creativity, while its long-standing craft traditions and ample production resources contributed to the country’s pre-eminence in the global design scene.

MANSION on the pages of L'Orient Le Jour

"Au cœur de Zoqaq el-Blat, une belle maison bourgeoise est hantée par des esprits créatifs. Derrière sa façade jaune et un peu décrépie, « Mansion » est à la fois un lieu de travail, une résidence d'artiste, une salle d'exposition et un lieu de détente ouvert à tous."
